NBC SPORTS CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH WITH “TOMBOY” – A MULTI-PLATFORM INITIATIVE ON GENDER IN SPORTS

Interview with Billie Jean King to be Featured in Documentary and Special Half-Hour Companion Program

NBC Sports Launches TOMBOY Social Media Roadblock

Two Out of Every Five Girls Play Sports Today – Up 40% Since Title IX in 1972

Stamford, Conn. – March 1, 2017 – In coordination with the start of Women’s History Month, NBC Sports amplifies TOMBOY, a multi-platform documentary project about gender in sports. The documentary is told through the voices of many of the world’s most prominent female athletes, broadcasters, and sports executives, including longtime champion for gender equality and women’s tennis icon Billie Jean King.

A sports pioneer, King joins an already extensive list of TOMBOY participants, including four-time World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn, Little League World Series pitching sensation Mo’ne Davis, and Basketball Hall of Famer Ann Meyers-Drysdale. A full list of participants in the one-hour documentary is available here. A companion half-hour interview program, Billie Jean King: Elevating the Conversation, produced by CSN Mid-Atlantic and hosted by CSN New England’s Trenni Kusnierek, will also be presented by NBC Sports Regional Networks as part of the initiative.

At noon ET today, all NBC Sports and select NBCUniversal accounts will conduct a social media roadblock to promote TOMBOY and the kickoff of Women’s History Month. Interested parties can join in the roadblock by changing their social media profile photos to a personalized image created by the TOMBOY avatar generator. Participants can find additional information on Twitter and Facebook using #CSNTOMBOY and by visiting @CSNTOMBOY.

In the last 40 years, the number of females participating in sports has nearly doubled, with two out of every five girls today choosing to play sports, according to the Women’s Sports Foundation. The documentary discusses reasons why some girls aren’t playing sports, as well as increases awareness and conversation about the participation of women in sports. NBC Sports Regional Networks announced last month the launch of TOMBOY, the first-of-its-kind integrated initiative that includes podcasts, articles and interviews released each weekday, culminating with a one-hour documentary airing on the networks of NBC RSNs, Owned Stations and NBCSN in March (dates below).

GEICO serves as the presenting sponsor of TOMBOY.

PREMIERE DATES:

TOMBOY will premiere in each market of the NBC Sports Regional Networks, and will encore nationally on NBCSN. TOMBOY will also air locally on select NBC Owned Television Stations throughout the month.
