STAMFORD, Conn. – January 16, 2017 – NBC Sports presents five NHL games this week, highlighted by a Wednesday Night Rivalry matchup on NBCSN this Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, when Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings host Brad Marchand and the Boston Bruins.
Bruins-Red Wings on Wednesday Night Rivalry kicks off a doubleheader which continues at 10:30 p.m. ET, when Drew Doughty and the Los Angeles Kings host Joe Pavelski and the San Jose Sharks on NBCSN’s Wednesday Nightcap.
This week’s NHL slate also features a “Star Sunday” matchup on the 2017 debut of the NHL Game of the Week this Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC, when the Red Wings welcome Henrik Lundqvist and the New York Rangers.
Coverage begins tonight with a classic matchup of the league’s biggest stars, when Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins face Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals at 7 p.m. ET. NBCSN presents a Central Division clash tomorrow night at 9 p.m. ET, when Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks visit Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche.
NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app — NBC Sports Group’s live streaming platforms for desktops, mobile devices, tablets, and connected TVs — will provide live streaming coverage of this week’s NHL action.
Four-time Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick (play-by-play), U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Eddie Olczyk (analyst), and Emmy Award-winner Pierre McGuire (‘Inside-the-Glass analyst) will call this week’s Bruins-Red Wings Wednesday Night Rivalry game and the Rangers-Red Wings NHL Game of the Week from Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich. Randy Hahn (play-by-play), Jim Fox (analyst), and Bret Hedican (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) call Sharks-Kings from Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
John Forslund (play-by-play) and McGuire call Caps-Penguins tonight in PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. Chris Cuthbert (play-by-play) and Ray Ferraro (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) call Blackhawks-Avalanche from Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.
Pre-game coverage on NHL Live begins one hour prior to all games on NBCSN. Liam McHugh and Kathryn Tappen will anchor coverage throughout the week, joined by analysts and former players Mike Milbury, Keith Jones, Jeremy Roenick, and Scott Gomez, as well as NHL insider Bob McKenzie for Wednesday Night Rivalry. Post-game coverage on NHL Overtime will air on NBCSN immediately following this week’s games.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT RIVALRY – BRUINS-RED WINGS – 8 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
Boston (23-8-5, 51 pts) currently sits in second place in the Atlantic Division, trailing Montreal (60 pts). Brad Marchand has averaged nearly a point per game this season, recording 43 points (17g/26a) in 46 games thus far. Marchand exploded with a five-point outing on Saturday (2g/3a) in the Bruins’ 6-3 win against Philadelphia at TD Garden in Boston.
Detroit (18-19-6, 42 pts) is coming off a 6-3 win against the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Larkin, Thomas Vanek, and Anthony Mantha are tied for the team lead in goals (11), and eight skaters on the Red Wings have scored nine goals or more this season.
WEDNESDAY NIGHTCAP – SHARKS-KINGS – 10:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
San Jose (25-16-2, 52 pts) is third in the Pacific Division, four points ahead of the rival Kings (22-17-4) who currently hold the second Wild Card spot. Defenseman Brent Burns has been an offensive force with 44 points (17g/27a) in 43 games, and he currently leads all NHL defensemen in goals and points.
The Kings are coming off back-to-back wins against St. Louis and Winnipeg, and led offensively by Jeff Carter, who is second in the NHL in goals (23) behind Sidney Crosby (26). This is the second matchup of the month between the two clubs. Los Angeles defeated San Jose 2-1 in overtime on Jan. 3, as Tanner Pearson scored the game-winner for the Kings.
“STAR SUNDAY” NHL GAME OF THE WEEK – RANGERS-RED WINGS – SUNDAY AT 12:30 P.M. ET ON NBC
New York (28-15-1, 57 pts) is tied with Pittsburgh for third place in the Metropolitan Division and is coming off a 5-4 loss to Montreal on Saturday. The Rangers continue to lead the NHL in goals scored (150). Michael Grabner leads the team in goals (19), one of seven Rangers with at least 10 goals, and is tied for ninth in the league in the category.
CAPITALS-PENGUINS – TONIGHT AT 7 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
Pittsburgh (26-11-5, 57 pts) hosts the red-hot Capitals tonight at PPG Paints Arena, where they’ve posted a 18-2-2 record in the 2016-17 season. Sidney Crosby continues to lead the NHL with 26 goals, and he’s tied with teammate Evgeni Malkin for third in the league in points (46).
Washington (29-9-5) is the hottest team in the Eastern Conference, riding a nine-game winning streak into Pittsburgh that has propelled the team to the best record in the NHL. The streak includes a 5-2 win against the Penguins on Wednesday Night Rivalry last week, and the Caps have outscored their opponents 40-11 in those nine games. Alex Ovechkin’s club has posted four shutouts during the streak, including back-to-back shutouts against Chicago on Friday (6-0) and Philadelphia on Sunday (5-0).
BLACKHAWKS-AVALANCHE – TOMORROW AT 9 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
Chicago (27-14-5, 59 pts) is second in the Western Conference behind Minnesota (61 pts) and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Wild last night on NBCSN’s “Star Sunday” matchup. The Blackhawks boast four players named to the All-Star roster (Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, and Corey Crawford).
Colorado (13-27-1, 27 pts) looks to snap a two-game losing streak tomorrow night. Nathan MacKinnon leads the club with 28 points (11g/17a), and will represent the Avalanche at this year’s All-Star Game in Los Angeles.
