MATTHEWS VS. MCDAVID – MAPLE LEAFS-OILERS – TOMORROW NIGHT ON NBCSN

NHL phenoms Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid face off against each other tomorrow night on NBCSN, the first U.S. national NHL telecast to feature both young superstars. Matthews burst onto the scene with a record four-goal game in his NHL debut, and currently ranks second among all rookies in goals (9). The Scottsdale, Ariz., native was selected first overall in this year’s draft by Toronto (9-8-4), and netted the game-winning goal in the Maple Leafs’ 4-2 win over the Capitals on Saturday.

McDavid currently leads the NHL in points (29), and has spurred his Oilers to the Pacific Division lead (12-9-2). The 19-year-old McDavid, who was selected by Edmonton first overall in the 2015 NHL Draft and is now in his second season, has averaged better than a point per game thus far in his NHL career (77 points in 68 games).

This is the second and final showdown between Matthews and McDavid this season. The Maple Leafs edged the Oilers by a score of 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 1 in Toronto.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RIVALRY – PENGUINS-ISLANDERS – WEDNESDAY AT 8 P.M. ET ON NBC

The Penguins (13-6-3) enter their Wednesday Night Rivalry matchup with New York following a 4-3 shootout win against New Jersey on Saturday. Captain Sidney Crosby leads the NHL with 15 goals this season, and has done it in only 16 games after missing the start of the season due to injury. Crosby scored in the final minute of regulation to force overtime in Pittsburgh’s win on Saturday.

The Islanders (6-10-4) return to Barclays Center following a Western swing that included a 3-2 shootout win against the Ducks in Anaheim. Captain John Tavares leads the club in all offensive categories, and scored in the team’s 3-2 loss to the Sharks in San Jose on Friday. The two clubs played in Brooklyn on Nov. 17, a 3-2 shootout win for the Penguins. New York hosts Calgary tonight before their matchup with the Penguins on Wednesday.
WEDNESDAY NIGHTCAP – SHARKS-KINGS – WEDNESDAY AT 10:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

San Jose and Los Angeles currently boast identical 12-9-1 records, although the Kings enter the week riding a five-game winning streak. Los Angeles has been led offensively by Jeff Carter’s 10 goals, but the story has been the play of goaltender Peter Budaj. Budaj has taken over between the pipes following an injury to Jonathan Quick in the season-opener, and has made 20 consecutive appearances for the Kings, posting a 12-6-1 record in that time.

San Jose had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday by Anaheim and was 6-2-1 in its prior nine games. Defenseman Brent Burns, who recently inked an eight-year deal with the Sharks, leads the club in goals (8) and points (20). Burns scored in the season-opener between the two teams, which San Jose won 2-1.
BRUINS-FLYERS – TOMORROW AT 7:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

The Flyers (10-10-3) enter tomorrow’s showdown with the Bruins following a 5-3 win at home over the Flames on Sunday. Wayne Simmonds leads the team with 21 points (11g/10a) and recorded a goal and an assist in Sunday’s victory. Philadelphia has scored the second-most goals in the league (72), but has allowed the most goals as well (76).

Boston (12-10-0) is coming off a 4-1 win against the Lightning on Sunday, which included a goal by David Pastrnak. The third-year player is second in the league with 13 goals scored, and has nearly eclipsed his goal total from a season ago, when he scored 15 goals in 51 games. Tuukka Rask ranks second or is tied for second in the league in wins (12), goals against average (1.62), and shutouts (3).
