NBCSN Opens 2016-17 NHL Season With Most-Watched Regular-Season Doubleheader in the Network’s History

STAMFORD, Conn. – Oct. 17, 2016 – NBCSN presents an Original Six clash on Wednesday Night Rivalry this week, when Henrik Lundqvist and the New York Rangers host Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

This week’s NHL coverage begins tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN with a rematch of the 2010 Stanley Cup Final, when Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks host Claude Giroux and the Philadelphia Flyers.

NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app — NBC Sports Group’s live streaming platforms for desktops, mobile devices, tablets, and connected TVs — will provide live streaming coverage of Flyers-Blackhawks and Red Wings-Rangers.

Four-time Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick (play-by-play), U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Eddie Olczyk (analyst), and Emmy Award-winner Pierre McGuire (‘Inside-the-Glass analyst) will call Red Wings-Rangers from Madison Square Garden in New York. Jim Jackson (play-by-play) and Keith Jones (analyst) will have the call of Flyers-Blackhawks from United Center in Chicago, Ill.

Pre-game coverage on NHL Live begins one hour before puck drop tomorrow and Wednesday on NBCSN. Liam McHugh anchors Wednesday Night Rivalry studio coverage with analysts Mike Milbury and Keith Jones, as well as NHL insider Bob McKenzie. Kathryn Tappen hosts tomorrow night’s studio coverage on NBCSN with analysts Jeremy Roenick and Brian Boucher.


WEDNESDAY NIGHT RIVALRY
: RED WINGS AT RANGERS – WEDNESDAY AT 8 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

The Rangers welcome the Red Wings to Madison Square Garden for an Original Six showdown on Wednesday Night Rivalry this week. Detroit enters this season looking to keep its streak of postseason appearances intact, and has reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs for 24 consecutive seasons. The Red Wings opened the season with a pair of losses last week on the road against Tampa Bay and Florida, and host the Ottawa Senators tonight.

The Rangers won their season opener at home against the rival New York Islanders, as five different forwards scored for the Rangers and Lundqvist stopped 25 shots. The Rangers lost by a score of 3-2 to the Blues in St. Louis on Saturday, and host the San Jose Sharks tonight. This marks the first of three meetings between the Rangers and Red Wings. Last season, the Rangers won two of three matchups between the two clubs, and all three games were decided by one goal.


FLYERS AT BLACKHAWKS – TOMORROW AT 8:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

After a pair of losses to open the season against St. Louis and Nashville earlier in the week, Chicago got its first win of the season on Saturday night with a 5-3 victory over the Nashville Predators at home. The Blackhawks were led by a hat trick from Richard Panik and a pair of assists from Patrick Kane in Saturday’s win.

Philadelphia won its season opener in Los Angeles by a score of 4-2, and earned a point in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Coyotes in Arizona. Last season, the Flyers won both meetings against the Blackhawks, including a 3-2 win in Chicago in March. Flyers forward Sean Couturier has a pair of goals in the first two games of the season to lead the club.
NBCSN OPENS 2016-17 NHL SEASON WITH MOST-WATCHED REGULAR-SEASON DOUBLEHEADER IN THE NETWORK’S HISTORY

NBC Sports Group started the first week of the 2016-17 NHL coverage with numerous viewership milestones. NBCSN’s doubleheader coverage of NHL “Face-Off” on Oct. 12 produced the most-watched regular-season doubleheader in the network’s history. The opening night Wednesday Night Rivalry twin bill, featuring 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff rematches between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks, and the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks, combined to average 696,000 viewers, up 3% percent vs. the previous record (679,000; 10/8/14; Flyers-Bruins and Sharks-Kings).

In addition, NBCSN’s coverage of Capitals-Penguins on Thursday night averaged 500,000 viewers, up 87% vs. the comparable non-exclusive average last season, and ranking as the  network’s most-watched non-WNR weeknight game since March 24, 2014 (BOS-MTL; 662,000). Blackhawks-Predators on Friday night, which was blacked out in Chicago, averaged 312,000 viewers, up 17% vs. comparable single-market blackout average last season.
