On golf’s return to the Olympics

Nick Faldo – “Everybody is coming out of here with sheer pride in what they’ve done. Harrington said it best last night when he said ‘There are 60 winners this week,’ which doesn’t happen in a normal, regular tournament.”

On the pressure heading into the weekend play and competing for Olympic medals

Faldo – “If you want fame, if you want to be a legend and if you can handle that for the rest of your life, this is the medal to win.”

Rich Lerner – “We could have the biggest third place battle in the history of golf.”

Faldo – “You have to have the mental strength this week since there are only three prizes. You have to use that as determination. It forces you into doing things – like all of the Olympics we have watched over the years – we see the Olympians do something, they pull off personal bests to get themselves to a bronze, silver or gold medal. I think we are going to see the same thing in golf.”

On Australia’s Marcus Fraser, leader at 10-under par

Faldo – “I admire Fraser’s wedge play this week. Really cool. Everything is within a couple of feet from the pin.”

Frank Nobilo – “If he wants to win a medal, he is going to have his keep his foot on the pedal.”

Brandel Chamblee – “You have to give him his due. First round 63, Olympic record, and he came back out today and played very solid golf.”

David Duval – “I was excited to see him back it up today. It tells me that as of now, he is up to the task and it will be interesting to see how he performs this weekend.”

On Belgium’s Thomas Pieters, one shot back at 9-under par

Nobilo – “He is an absolute star of the future.”

Duval – “There is no reason why we aren’t going to be talking about him moving forward like we talk about Rory McIlroy and Jason Day. He has that potential to get up there into the top-5, top-10, top-15 in the world.”

Faldo – “What a great golf swing. He has got so much talent.”

On Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, two shots back at 8-under par

Faldo – “He is in an amazing place in his career right now. He has battled over the last few years and is in a very confident position in his career.”

Lerner – “He is a super talent and a super star. So much fun to watch.”

On Great Britain’s Justin Rose, T4 at 6-under par

Faldo – “He is in a strong position heading into the weekend because he has been here and is well prepared physically, technically and mentally.”
