NBC Sports’ David Feherty speaking with NBC’s Matt Lauer and Hoda Kotb on TODAY Thursday morning about golf’s return to the Olympics for the first time in 112 years
David Feherty – “It means a tremendous amount because there are so many developing countries and countries that don’t or haven’t had golf as a program that haven’t had any government funding. When it becomes an Olympic sport, that money comes from governments. It’s such a festival atmosphere and an amazing event to take part in.”
Matt Lauer – “Golf once again is an Olympic sport, and I’m loving it. It’s going to be fun to watch.”

On golf’s return to the Olympic Games this morning for the first time in 112 years
Nick Faldo – “For some players this week would be a great win. To drape a medal around a Claret Jug maybe or around a green jacket. And others it’s going to define their golfing careers. And some it’s going to define their lives. That’s the importance of it.”
Paul McGinley – “112 years we’ve waited for this. We’ve all been really energized by the other sports we’ve seen this week. It’s a big deal for golf, we’re dining at the top table of sport here. As a sport we’re ready. We’re dining at the top table of sport, and we’re ready to have some really good food.”
Faldo – “I guarantee every single player in the field has had the dream… even if you think you’re a long shot you still think, ‘could I get my feet on the podium?’ You dream big right now, this is the Olympics. We’re all hoping that we’ll have that magical moment on Sunday where non-golfers watching say, ‘Wow, that was amazing to watch what that golfer did.’”
McGinley – “It’s the shared idea of being among other athletes. Sometimes we can be a little bit insular in our own sport. Not just golf, but all sports thinking that everything revolves around our sport. But when you come here and realize that it’s so much bigger, it creates a real sense of humbleness. And I think that’s a really good place to be for a sportsman to have that humility.”
