Day 2 Results and Points Standings

On England’s Melissa Reid playing by herself in her match vs. Japan (Playing partner Charley Hull withdrew from the match this morning due to illness. Japan won 1 up, w/ the match going 18 holes)
Judy Rankin – “In this type of a format, when you are suddenly playing two by yourself, it is intimating and overwhelming. She did not play well yesterday and didn’t have anything to draw upon to say, ‘I can do this.’ She simply said, ‘I’ve been hitting it pretty well, but haven’t taken it to the golf course.’ Well, you know what Mel Reid, you took it to the golf course today.”
Rankin – “It has been some valiant effort and she has played one of the best competitive rounds of golf today in quite a long time. That might serve her well for the next couple of days.”
Rankin – “It is a victory in its own way for Mel Reid.”
Terry Gannon – “If there ever was a moral victory, it is right there. A personal victory. All by herself.”
Rankin – “Every player here today admires what she did.”
Nicole Castrale – I have been impressed with Mel today. With the struggles Mel had with her ball striking yesterday, it almost is like she flipped the switch knowing it was all on her. She had no one else that she could rely on like she had yesterday.”
Castrale – “She is playing so aggressive. She is taking drivers over corners where players are laying up. She is going for broke out here and she is hitting it beautifully.”
Gannon – “Some kind of effort by her today, coming off of a round that she struggled.”
Castrale – “She is such a fiery player, and obviously that fire has been lit.”
Gannon – “She is a different player today.”

England’s Holly Clyburn talking to Golf Channel’s Karen Stupples about Reid’s match
Holly Clyburn – “Absolutely proud, couldn’t be any prouder than I am right now. Her confidence should be through the roof right now and that is where we want it.”

Reid talking to Golf Channel’s Nicole Castrale following her match
Melissa Reid – “I needed to put my swing under pressure and it delivered today. I played pretty solid, obviously competing against two of the best players in the world, it is hard to do on your own. We were saying on the range that if we took them past 13 it would be a good day. So to take them to 18 was really nice.”

On Team U.S.A. winning 3 points on Friday (winning one match and halving the other)
Rankin – “The U.S. just came out firing today.”
Karen Stupples – “It has been really quite remarkable the difference, watching them play from yesterday to today.”

On Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr defeating Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn and Porani Chutichai 4&3
Stupples – “Cristie is so engaged in this match today, it’s really cool to see. She is infecting Lexi with that same enthusiasm.”
Rankin – “You cannot be the putter that Cristie Kerr is and not be a good green reader.”
Gannon – “When that putter gets hot, she (Kerr) is the best there is on the greens, because she believes she is the best there is and is going to make everything.”

Kerr and Thompson Talking to Golf Channel’s Karen Stupples following their match
Kerr – “We played awesome. We knew we had to come up strong today. We were facing a tough team. I just tried to make some putts early and just got rolling with it.”
Thompson – “I love watching her putt. She just walks those things in. it gives me more confidence to have her by my side.”

On Stacy Lewis and Gerina Piller halving their match with Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn and Pornanong Phatlum
Rankin – “You’ve got to give the young Thai players credit. It was a gutsy hang on for them.”

Lewis and Piller talking to Golf Channel’s Jerry Foltz following their match
Gerina Piller – “I felt like we played well, but like we said at the beginning of the week, it is anybody’s game.”
Stacy Lewis – “We have to come out tomorrow and get more points and hopefully we are around for another day.”

On The Merit Club, host for the UL International Crown
Rankin – “We have seen great shots here. I’m amazed that it plays the way it is played because it looks very intimidating.”
