Rory McIlroy speaking with Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis following his 9-hole Wednesday practice round
Rory McIlroy – “Rain or no rain on this golf course, it’s still a very, very hard test of golf. It might soften it up a little bit, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the scores are going to necessarily be that much lower. The balls might stay in the fairways a little bit more, and might hold on the green a little bit more, but it’s still not going to make much of a difference. I’d say between having a little bit of rain in this forecast and not having rain might be a half-a-shot to a shot difference out here. I really don’t see the rain being that much of a factor.”

Jordan Spieth speaking with Lewis following his 9-hole Wednesday practice round
Jordan Spieth – “This is a once-in-a-year type challenge and I wouldn’t mind having it a couple of other times a year… The game plan changes a little bit if the greens are softer and the fairways are softer. The likelihood is [that] you still have to give it a tremendous amount of respect and accept that even-par when you stand on the first tee is a great score. You’ve got to have that mentality no matter how the course is.”

On Spieth
Arron Oberholser – “He’s a victim of his own success. So many times we put these guys on pedestals… and Tiger did things that I don’t think will ever be done again. And to put Jordan Spieth this young in his career in that echelon … You can’t do that to a guy.”

On the potential advantage of playing aggressively off the tee at Oakmont
Mark Rolfing – “Length off the tee is going to be important. And that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to favor the long hitters. What it means is that it’s going to favor a hitter that’s willing to hit a long club off the tee… If you lay back and are hitting middle and longer irons into these greens, eventually it’s going to catch up to you.”
