NBC Olympics to Present Extensive & Unprecedented Coverage of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials
STAMFORD, Conn. – May 19, 2016 – NBC Olympics continues its extensive and unprecedented coverage of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials this Sunday at 4 p.m. ET on NBCSN, when the U.S. Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Teams face off against Australia for a pair of matches in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
NBC Sports Live Extra – NBC Sports Group’s live streaming product for desktops, mobile devices, tablets, and connected TVs – will live stream both U.S. Water Polo matches vs. Australia, beginning Sunday at 4 p.m. ET.
Paul Burmeister (play-by-play), Olympic silver medalist Julie Swail (analyst), three-time Olympian Wolf Wigo (analyst), and reporter Tanith White will provide commentary for Sunday’s matches from the Uytengsu Aquatics Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The U.S. Men will face Australia in the first match, followed by the U.S. Women vs. Australia. Both the U.S. and Australian men’s and women’s teams have already qualified for the Rio Games.
The U.S. Men’s Water Polo Team last won an Olympic medal in 2008, when they earned silver in Beijing. The U.S. faced Australia last weekend at the FINA Water Polo World League Men’s Intercontinental Tournament, defeating the Aussies with a 10-9 come-from-behind win in the waning moments of the match.
The U.S. and Australia are the two most decorated teams at the Olympics in women’s water polo. The U.S. is the only nation to have earned a medal at every Olympics that has offered women’s water polo (dating back to 2000), while the Australians have claimed a medal in three of the four Olympic tournaments. The U.S. Women are ranked No. 1 in the world and have captured the “water polo grand slam,” as they are the current Olympic, World, World Cup and World League champions. These two teams have met in either the semifinals or a medal match of every Olympics, with the Americans winning the last three matches after Australia won the gold medal game at home in 2000.
THE RIO OLYMPICS BEGIN AUGUST 5, 2016
