On the United States’ 4-1 lead after Day 1
Chamblee – “It’s easy to say that this is going to be a route. This is what a route looks like in the beginning… But it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that the International side can mount a comeback.”
McGinley – “I don’t think this is over yet… When a team takes a heavy defeat in one session, you can bet your bottom dollar that there is a reaction in the next session.”
Duval – “I look at the American side and I wonder where this team gets beat… The International team has to kind of chip away right now… If you get anything reminiscent of the first round matches today, then everyone will ask ‘how is there any chance [the International team] can come back?’”
Duval – “As important as anything [for the International team] is to not fall behind. Even if you split the session and you walk away with a tie, I think that’s a victory after the first day of matches.”
McGinley – “At worst [the Internationals] have to come out of this session 2 ½ to 2 ½. They’ve got to extend the flow of blood. But they can’t lose any more [ground] after taking a heavy defeat yesterday.”

On Match #1: D. Johnson/Spieth vs. Oosthuizen/Grace
Duval – “Oosthuizen and Grace really need to step up. The task in front of them seems mighty improbable when you’re talking Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson.”
Chamblee – “Dustin Johnson hasn’t played great yet in team competition… I think Jordan Spieth has that sort of influence where he makes people around him better… I can’t help but think [Johnson] will take measure of how Jordan Spieth handles situations like these. Because it’s that little bit that’s keeping him from breaking through and winning major championships. And it’s certainly within his reach.”
McGinley – “It’s a pretty formidable partnership… [Johnson] is certainly going to feed off the fact that Jordan is a very confident player.”
Gallagher Jr. – “This is the best matchup, the two strongest teams from both sides. The gladiators going at it.”

On Match #2: Fowler/ Walker vs. Lee/ Bae
Duval – “[Fowler and Walker] gel together on the golf course… They have a similar game and a similar way to how they go about things.”
Oberholser – “That’s an emotionally charged pairing. Those guys [Lee and Bae] are going to have an entire country behind them.”

On Match #3: Z. Johnson/Mickelson vs. Scott/Day
Duval – “When you get into a situation with Zach Johnson who plods around so beautifully, if anything it will free [Mickelson] up to play better because he’ll feel like he can really get after it.”
Oberholser – “He [Nick Price] is throwing the entire artillery arsenal at them with these teams. Emotionally, firepower-wise, he is trying to even this up with these pairings, no doubt.”
