A Look at One of the Promoted Clubs – Burnley

STAMFORD, Conn. – August 9, 2014 – NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the 2014-15 Premier League season kicks off seven days from today, on Saturday, August 16. Coverage begins at 7 a.m. ET with Premier League Live on NBCSN followed by Manchester United v. Swansea City and continues throughout the season on the networks of NBCUniversal, on the Premier League Extra Time bonus TV package, and streamed live on NBC Sports Live Extra.
PREMIER LEAGUE NUMBER OF THE DAY: 7
Last season, for the 7th time since the Premier League’s creation in 1992, the title was decided on the final day, Championship Sunday, when Manchester City beat West Ham 2-0 to finish two points clear of runners-up Liverpool and win their second Premier League trophy in three seasons.
NBC Sports Group will once again make all 380 games from the Premier League available in the United States. All games will be preceded and followed by Premier League Live pre- and post-match shows from the NBC Sports Group International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Conn.
New Season, New Teams: Burnley
Burnley earned automatic promotion to the 2014-15 Premier League by finishing second in the Championship last season. With only one previous season of Premier League experience (2009-10), the club will face an uphill fight for top-flight survival. Burnley is the smallest town in England to currently have a Premier League club, with a population of approximately 87,000.
As one of the 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888, Burnley have played an important part in the history of English football. They have won two top-division titles (1920-21, 1959-60) and one FA Cup (1913-14), but have fallen on harder times in the past 50 years. In 1984-85, the Clarets were relegated to the fourth tier of English football, and competed in the third tier when the Premier League kicked off its inaugural season in 1992-93. In 2009, they won the Championship Playoffs to secure Premier League promotion, ending a 33-year wait for top-flight play. But the joys of Premier League football were short-lived, as the Clarets ended the campaign in 18th and were relegated back to the Championship.
