USMNT CAPTAIN CLINT DEMPSEY & SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC VISIT PORTLAND TIMBERS SATURDAY AT 3 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

“Another chapter in a great history will be written Saturday” – John Strong

Stamford, Conn. – April 2, 2014 – NBCSN’s Major League Soccer coverage this weekend features one of the biggest rivalries in American soccer, when the Portland Timbers host the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET, immediately following NBCSN’s Premier League coverage.

The Timbers and Sounders meet for the first time in the MLS regular season since last November when Portland came out on top in the Western Conference Semifinals. U.S. Men’s National Team captain Clint Dempsey (1 goal and 1 assist in two MLS appearances this season) leads the Sounders into a tough Providence Park in Portland.

COMMENTATORS:NBC Sports Group’s lead play-by-play announcer John Strong calls the match joined by former U.S. National Team midfielder Kyle Martino and host Russ Thaler.

Strong on Portland Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders FC: “The rivalry between the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders FC is the greatest rivalry in American soccer. This isn’t just my opinion, but almost a consensus from people I’ve spoken with around MLS. It dates back four decades, flares the passions of multiple generations of fans, and is always one of the top in-stadium spectacles and atmospheres of the year. But there’s an important twist now with Portland’s resurgence last season, in that it’s now contested between two of the top teams in the Western Conference. Last year’s playoff defeat has a bitter taste in Seattle’s mouth, while Portland is feeling a bit edgy in search of their first win. Another chapter in a great history will be written Saturday.”
