Stamford, Conn. – February 12, 2014 – Highlights of Thursday’s coverage of the XXII Olympic Winter Games:
- NBC’s primetime presentation – which begins at 8 p.m. ET – features the men’s short figure skating program, where Russian figure skating legend Yevgeny Plushenko skates for his fifth Olympic medal, and Jeremy Abbott and Jason Brown skate for the U.S. team after they finished first and second, respectively, at the 2014 National Championships.
- Coverage in primetime continues with the inaugural gold medal final for men’s freeski slopestyle. Indiana native Nick Goepper leads the deep crop of U.S. freeskiers after collecting wins at several recent major events. In addition, primetime includes the 1000m gold medal final in women’s speed skating featuring American training partners and roommates Heather Richardson and Brittany Bowe who arrive at the Sochi Games finished 1-2 in three of the four 1000m World Cup races this season; and women’s skeleton, where Utah native Noelle Pikus-Pace, who finished fourth in the 2010 Vancouver Games, is a top contender in Sochi.
- Tomorrow’s live coverage on NBCSN begins at 3 a.m. ET and is highlighted by Team USA’s debut in the men’s hockey tournament, when captain Zach Parise leads the Americans against Slovakia at 7:30 a.m. ET.
- Live MSNBC coverage begins at 7:30 a.m. ET when Alex Ovechkin and Russia host Slovenia in men’s hockey. USA’s live coverage begins at 5 a.m. ET with men’s curling between Team USA and Great Britain, followed at noon ET by captain Sidney Crosby and Team Canada against Norway. CNBC’s Olympic coverage continues at 5 p.m. ET with women’s curling as Team USA faces Japan.
Following are highlights from today’s NBC coverage of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi:
Ted Robinson on Shani Davis finishing out of medal contention in 1000m: “There will be no three-peat. There will be no medal for Shani Davis in the 1,000…that’s the quietest this arena has been at the end of a race, perhaps the entire competition.”
Dan Jansen on Shani Davis: “I’m shocked…when you see the best in the world, you expect him to be at the top…he looked to lack a little leg speed, a little drive.”
Shani Davis on the difference between his ninth-place finish and previous gold medal races: “I have no idea…I don’t even know where to begin. I just think that today, I felt good, I was confident, went out there and raced the best race I could possibly skate – it just wasn’t inside of me today.”
Dan Hicks as Tina Maze ties Dominique Gisin for gold in the women’s downhill: “Two silvers in Vancouver for Tina Maze, looking for gold here over Gisin as she comes rocketing down the mountain…141:57 is the time to beat for Maze, can she get under it? She’s right on it! A tie for gold! Absolutely incredible!”
Hicks on Maze and Gisin tying for gold: “It’s enough to win Olympic gold by yourself, but this is almost surreal – to share it with someone else.”
Scott Hamilton on Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir in the pairs’ free program: “I don’t know how they’re going to go home. They’ve spent so much time on Olympic ice, at the Boston Skating Club they’re going to have to paint the rings on the boards so they don’t feel like they’re out of place – they had a great Olympics.”
Todd Richards on Kaitlyn Farrington’s gold medal run in the halfpipe final: “Kaitlyn Farrington delivered on that run…non-stop insanity from top to bottom.”
Todd Harris on Farrington winning gold in the halfpipe final: “Kaitlyn Farrington is America’s newest golden girl in the halfpipe…Sochi belongs to Kaitlyn Farrington.”
Farrington on her gold-medal performance in the halfpipe final: “I was really just hoping to make finals…and I was definitely hoping to get on the podium…but I didn’t expect to be on top.”
Matt Lauer closing Wednesday’s primetime telecast, on Bob Costas: “Bob, get back soon. I’m running out of clothes.”
