RECAP THE EXCITEMENT FROM THE 2013 RE/MAX WORLD LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON SATURDAY ON NBC
ORLANDO, Fla., (Dec. 26, 2013) – The longest hitters in golf come to network television for the first time when NBC Sports recaps the adrenaline and excitement of the 2013 RE/MAX WORLD LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP, Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
With drives eclipsing 400 yards and featuring larger-than-life personalities, The RE/MAX WORLD LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP is the annual world championship of long driving, which has taken place each year since 1975 and attracts competitors from all over the world. Viewers will experience all of the action of the 2013 RWLDC season in the hour-long special, beginning with grassroots qualifying and regional Long Drivers of America Tour events. The 2013 season culminated with a finale under the lights at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a new venue for the season-ending competition.
The two-hour finale in October featured eight finalists from throughout North America battling for the championship belt and the coveted $250,000 winner-take-all prize. And it was speed personified, with the competitors’ swings exceeding 150 miles per hour, ball speeds topping 220 miles per hour and balls traveling the length of more than four football fields. The pumped-up finalists hit from a custom-made platform built high into the speedway’s grandstands on to a Championship grid on the race track infield below.
In October, 2012, Long Drivers of America announced a new three-year broadcast partnership with Golf Channel, which covered the RE/MAX WORLD LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP live this past year. Participation in competitions has nearly tripled and prize money has increased five-fold. Finalists in the competition often have swing speeds of up to 150 miles per hour and can hit the ball more than 400 yards, which is more than 100 yards longer than the average PGA TOUR professional.
