Notes:

The American Century Championship finished with a three-hole playoff between past champions Mark Rypien (1990) and Billy Joe Tolliver (1996, 2005 and 2010).  Tolliver won on the third playoff hole. Live coverage aired on NBC and concluded on NBC Sports Network.

On Billy Joe Tolliver, 2013 American Century Champion

Roger Maltbie – “He is pretty good around the greens.  He is pretty good with the wedges. He is just streaky with the putter.  But when he is good with the putter, he contends, and he did that this week.”

On the playoff between Mark Rypien and Billy Joe Tolliver

Roger Maltbie – “These guys don’t take much time.  They don’t dilly dally.  It is refreshing to see.”

On Mark Rypien hitting his approach shot on the third playoff hole (18th) into the water

Roger Maltbie – “Well, that is not what I thought would have happened there.  That is a shame.”

On Michael Phelps and his first appearance at the American Century Championship

Gary Koch – “His short game just not quite there yet.”

Roger Maltbie – “I know he is a little disappointed but it was great having him here.  He has added a lot to the event.”

Michael Phelps joined Roger Maltbie and Bob Papa in the 18th tower following his round

Michael Phelps – “I had fun and had some good shots out there.  Couldn’t putt.  I couldn’t hit yesterday, but today was good.  As long as I hit a couple of good shots, that is all that really matters.”

Phelps, on participating in Golf Channel’s The Haney Project – “I’m very happy I did it.  Hank and I had a great experience on it, and hopefully if I get invited back next year, I’ll put up a better score.”

Roger Maltbie: “You decided not to get back in the pool and I assume one of the things you are going to miss is competition.  Is golf going to be that avenue, a place where you can compete?”

Michael Phelps: “Maybe I should get back in the pool after how bad I did today.  It is a lot easier to swim than golf.  The biggest thing about golf that I want to do is I want to be able to compete.  I have friends who are scratch golfers, and I’m a very competitive person.  It is not fun going out there and getting absolutely tortured every single hole.  So, this is something that will take a lot of time and a lot of work, and it is something that I am looking forward to doing.”

On Chris Chandler’s putting woes on the back nine

Roger Maltbie – “The putter has absolutely escaped him.  He has just been putting abysmally on this back nine.”

Roger Maltbie – “He is going to be playing that what-if game with himself.”

On Stephen Curry, third round leader who finished in the top-5 with 64 points

Roger Maltbie – “In future years, we are not going to be surprised when he contends again.  He has a lot of game.”
