COMCAST SPORTSNET TO PREMIERE NAVAL ACADEMY DOCUMENTARY, THE 2013 SEA TRIALS, SUNDAY, JUNE 30, AT 8 P.M.

ONE-HOUR SPECIAL TO SHOWCASE SERVICE ACADEMY’S ANNUAL 15-HOUR ENDURANCE CHALLENGE THROUGH EXPERIENCES OF 3 PARTICIPANTS

Bethesda, Md. (June 27, 2013) – Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic will premiere The 2013 Sea Trials, an original one-hour documentary on the U.S. Naval Academy’s annual Sea Trials training exercise for fourth class midshipmen (plebes), on Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m. The premiere of the special program, which will be presented with limited interruption, will also be available to military service members stationed overseas on American Forces Network.

The 2013 Sea Trials will provide a comprehensive account of the 15-hour series of rigorous physical and mental challenges designed to test teamwork and reinforce the bonds of the plebe class at the conclusion of their first year in May. The 2013 Sea Trials will focus on Class of 2016 participants Sara Giraldo, who competes on the Navy marathon team; Gary Coleman Jr., a native of Baltimore; and Max Goldwasser, a member of the Navy boxing team. Their experiences surrounding the Sea Trials, as well as their unique personal stories, will be featured throughout the program.

The 2013 Sea Trials will also provide insight on the activities that are part of the Sea Trials, which is modeled after the Marine Corps’ Crucible and Navy’s Battle Stations recruit program. Beginning at the event’s 3 a.m. start, the program will highlight each challenge throughout the day as they are completed, which includes obstacle courses, tactical exercises and paintball. Naval Academy upperclassmen, who lead Sea Trials as a leadership challenge, and other personnel will be introduced throughout the program to provide information on the activities.

The 2013 Sea Trials will also cover this year’s Herndon Monument climb. The historic event features approximately 1,000 plebes attempting to climb the Naval Academy’s Herndon Monument, a 21-foot obelisk that has been covered in grease, to replace the plebe hat at the top with an upperclassman hat. The event serves as the traditional end of the plebe year.

Produced by Comcast SportsNet, The 2013 Sea Trials will also be presented as an encore multiple times, including July 4 at 4 p.m., July 13 at 4 p.m., July 19 at 9 p.m. and July 20 at 7 p.m. The program will also be offered On-Demand, where available, following the Sunday premiere.
