NETWORK EARNS THREE AWARDS FOR REDSKINS COVERAGE, INCLUDING BEST LIVE SPORTING EVENT, WEEKLY SPORTS PROGRAM AND SPORTS SPECIAL
JENKINS TAKES HOME TOP HONOR FOR SPORTS ANCHOR; MATICH CLAIMS FIFTH EMMY FOR SPORTS ANALYST
Bethesda, Md. (June 17, 2013) – The National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) recognized Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic with six 2012 Emmy Awards at the 55th Annual Emmy Awards Gala on Saturday, June 15, in Baltimore. Comcast SportsNet, which earned an award in each category it was nominated for this year, has won 58 Emmy Awards since 2001.
Comcast SportsNet’s Emmy Awards – which include three honors for its coverage of the Washington Redskins – were earned for live sporting event (Redskins preseason game), daily/weekly sports program (Redskins Kickoff), one-time sports special (RGIII: Mission Possible) and sports program promo (Capitals playoffs), as well as individual categories for sports anchor (Michael Jenkins) and sports play-by-play/analyst (Trevor Matich).
Comcast SportsNet’s coverage of Washington Redskins preseason games, in conjunction with the Redskins Broadcast Network, won a second consecutive Emmy as the region’s top live sporting event. The network has earned the top honor in this category eight times since 2001, including four of the last five years. Previous live sporting event awards have been won by Comcast SportsNet for its coverage of the Redskins (2011), Washington Capitals (2010, 2008, 2005, 2004), Baltimore Orioles (2003) and Washington Wizards (2001).
Comcast SportsNet was also recognized for its Redskins coverage with two awards in original programming categories. Redskins Kickoff, the network’s long-running Redskins pre-game show, won its third Emmy Award for daily/weekly sports program. Including two previous wins for Redskins Kickoff (2009, 2008), the network has now won five awards in this category in the last five years. Also honored with an award this year was Comcast SportsNet’s half-hour special on Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, RGIII: Mission Possible, which won for one-time sports special.
Comcast SportsNet anchor and reporter Michael Jenkins was recognized with the Emmy Award for top sports anchor, which is his fourth individual honor, including his second for sports anchor, in the past eight years. Jenkins has previously earned Emmys for program host/moderator (2011), sports reporter (2008) and sports anchor (2004).
Comcast SportsNet’s Redskins analyst Trevor Matich claimed the Emmy Award for sports play-by-play/analyst for his work on Redskins Kickoff and Redskins Postgame Live, his fifth individual honor since 2007. He has previously been recognized as the region’s top sports analyst four times (2011, 2010, 2009, 2007) and has collected two additional Emmys as part of Redskins Kickoff, including this year’s award for best daily/weekly sports program.
Comcast SportsNet also won the Emmy Award for Sports Program Promo for Capitals Playoffs 2012, This is Pressure.
